We hope you’re culturally respective when picking your costumes this year, and using makeup products that are safe for you. Beware of scary ingredients this Halloween with list of totally safe products. Remember, a 10 Dirty Meter™ rating is the dirtiest rating, while a 1 rating is the cleanest rating. Let’s get started!

1. Homemade Face Paint

Did you know that a report released by the Breast Cancer Fund’s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that heavy metals like lead and cadmium were found in some tested face paints? A face paint recipe so safe you can eat it (you should probably save your stomach for your candy though).

Instead of using this rated 7 eyeshadow to enhance your look, try Elate Clean Cosmetics Pressed Eye Color Quintessence instead. Not only do they provide for great pigment, but the product is only rated a 2 !

4. Homemade Fake Blood

Instead of: Mehron Theatre Performance Squirt Blood (Rated 10)

Getting into the scary stuff, blood can take your costume to another level this halloween whether it’s faking a stabbing or blood dripping from your vampire lips. As cool and realistic as these costumes may sound, this fake blood received a 10 rating on our Dirty Meter scale for its use of 5 dirty ingredients. For this #trythisinstead, we actually recommend making your own fake blood! Just mix water, corn syrup, and red food coloring – and viola! You have your own sweet, viscous blood to scare someone with.

5. Rejuva Minerals Pur’ Lips Moisturizing Lipstick – Red, Red Wine (Rated 0)

Instead of: MAC Satin Lipstick - Film Noir (Rated 10)

Complete your costume with some lipstick but be careful of the many rated 10 options out there like this one. Not only do we love Rejuva Mineral Pur’ Lips Moisturizing Lipstick for a non-toxic boost of color, but it also works great for your Rosie the Riveter costume. You can do it!

6. Living Nature Mascara Thickening Jet Black (Rated 0)

Instead of: Dior Diorshow Black Out Waterproof Mascara 099 Kohl Black (Rated 10)

We know that Halloween is the time for dramatic costume makeup, and lashes play a big part. However, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben are all Dirty ingredients that we are don’t want in our beauty products and especially not near our eyes. Unfortunately the rated 10 option listed here do contain those ingredients. We prefer rated 0 Living Nature Mascara Thickening Jet Black for voluminous lashes that we don’t have to worry about.

7. Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals Self Tan Bronzing Minerals (Rated 0)

Instead of: Rimmel Natural Bronzer (Rated 10)

Inching closer towards your final look, you might have to contour your face to change its shape into your final Halloween look. Maybe you want to give yourself higher cheekbones and a thinner nose to resemble Angelina Jolie or change your facial structure to look like a tiger! Either way, you’ll want to avoid using this bronzer, which is rated 10 for its use of butylparaben. Check out rated 0 Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals Self Tan Bronzing Minerals instead.

8. W3LL People Realist Mineral Setting Powder (Rated 2)

Instead of: Maybelline Fit Me! Bronzer Pressed Powder (Rated 10)

At this point, you are READY for your night. You have your entire Halloween makeup look prepared, and you just need to set it off with some powder to make it stay in one place. This rated 10 product contains the dirty ingredients propylparaben, isobutylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, polyethylene terephthalate, and polymethyl methacrylate. Check out W3LL People Realist Mineral Setting Powder for a safe, non-toxic power you can rely on for everyday.

One more thing— if you’re going out this Halloween, be sure to bring a hand sanitizer with you. We suggest grabbing the Kosmatology Hand Sanitizer. They are created with no parabens, no phthalates, or triclosan and they smell better than candy. There’s nothing scarier than germs!
