2 years ago, Think Dirty was launched during breast cancer aw̶a̶r̶e̶n̶e̶s̶s̶ prevention month. Our singular mission is empower women and men to be ingredient-literate, and choose healthy, non-toxic and carcinogen-free products. Part of cancer-prevention is to maintain an awareness of our product ingredients – a potential environmental risk factors for breast cancer

We often notice the “pinkwashing” trend which occurs during Breast Cancer Awareness month. Many large companies promote their (not-so-clean) products with a pink ribbon… quite sad and ironic, isn’t it? In honour of Breast Cancer Prevention month, we have listed clean products, along with their not-so-clean counterparts. We hope this will inspire you to learn about new products and make small changes to your beauty routine.

1. Lilly & Lola’s Coconut Oil Moisturizer - Rated 0

Kicking us off on the dirty-meter is the well-known Clinique Moisturizing Lotion. This lotion rates at a 5 and also contains propylparabens, so we strongly suggest you try Lilly & Lola’s Coconut Oil Moisturizer which rates at at 0! This product will leave your skin feeling fresh and not-oily!

2.  Kosmatology’s Hand Therapy Moisturizing Stick - Rated 0

We often go through multiple hand lotions throughout winter. The second offender is Aveda’s Hand Relief Lotion, with rates at an alarming 9. The product contains quite a few dirty ingredients, namely retinyl, palmitate, Butylparaben, and Chlorphenesin. Instead, try Kosmatology’s Hand Therapy Moisturizing Stick, which contains all natural ingredients, such as hemp seed oil, olive oil and vitamin E. Guaranteed to keep your hands soft through the cold winter!

3. Vita Liberata’s Self-Tanning Tinted Lotion or Nkd Skn Gradual Glow Daily Tan Moisturizer - Rated 0

Many of us try to keep a tan throughout the year by using a variety of tanning lotions and sprays. Model Co’s Super Tan Instant Self Tan, rated a 9, contains fragrance. Try Vita Liberata’s Self-Tanning Tinted Lotion or Nkd Skn Gradual Glow Daily Tan Moisturizer which both rate a 0. Free of parabens, sulfates and phthalates, these self-tanning lotions are gentle enough for dry and sensitive skin types and creates a natural-looking tan.

6. Earth Kiss Pore Cleansing Mud Mask - Rated 0

Our last offender is Estee Lauder’s Firming/Sculpting Face and Neck Crème. Rated at an alarming 10 on the dirty meter, this crème contains octinoxate and fragrance.
